Volunteers from Kaiser Permanente Give Back on MLK Day

Kaiser Permanente volunteers partnered with HandsOn Bay Area on Martin Luther King Day. HandsOn Bay Area creates volunteer opportunities to connect companies to nonprofits that need help. As part of MLK’s Day of Service, the Kaiser volunteers spent the day giving a much needed facelift to Ability Now.

Over 60 Kaiser volunteers arrived bright and early on Monday, January 16th, and after a continental breakfast, everyone got to work. One group of volunteers planted trees along Ability Now’s parking lot, while another group painted new parking space lines on top of old and faded lines.

Other volunteers built new planters for our Horticulture Program, which were made at various heights so our participants can access them more easily. Inside Ability Now, even more volunteers spent the first part of the day preparing the walls in the dining room and hallways for a desperately needed new paint job. By the time the volunteers were ready to go home, the walls were covered in a beautiful light gray paint.

At the end of the day, the Kaiser volunteers left behind not just new paint, plants and planters, but a commitment to supporting their community, just as Martin Luther King asked all of us to do.
