SJSU Kinesiology Research Begins in Earnest

Ability Now participants began the first stage of the research project they are participating in with the Kinesiology Department at San Jose State University (SJSU). They went down to the SJSU campus to begin the diagnostic stage of the research.

The diagnostics included a full body scan that measures BMI, bone density, fat distribution, muscle distribution, and tissue quantitation. From there, each of the participants were individually tested on balance and control of their upper body and their ability to repetitively push a lower leg weight.

With the full diagnostics in place, the participants will take part in an exercise regime 2-3 times a week. The exercise routine has been designed to strengthen certain muscles and increase bone density, and the participants will be re-tested in 12 weeks to see if the exercises have improved their balance, bone density and leg strength.

Individuals with Cerebral Palsy have a higher rate of osteoporosis beginning at a younger age, and higher rates of bone fractures that take much longer to heal. The research from the Kinesiology Department at SJSU is the first quantitative study to see if a targeted exercise regime can slow down the effects of osteoporosis on individuals with Cerebral Palsy. Ability Now is thrilled to be part of this ground-breaking research.
