Ability Now’s Monique Harris and Andre Le Mont Wilson Published in Literary Anthology

Monique and AndreAbility Now participant, Monique Renee Harris, and Ability Now Small Business Development Lead Instructor, Andre Le Mont Wilson, will have their work published in the March edition of the anthology Seeing Beyond the Surface. The anthology accepts work from both disabled individuals and people who live or work with them, and is designed to raise awareness about peoples with disabilities.

Blue LadyMonique’s accepted story, “Mastermind”, recounts how, as a little girl, she tricked her baby sister into doing things for her, such as buying ice cream with the March of Dimes money they received from donations. With guidance from Andre, Monique’s work has been published in the past. Her poems “Eyes,” “My Knees,” and “Speed” were published in Wordgathering over the last three years, and her poem, “Black Boy” was published in Dryland last year. Additionally, Monique’s digital art piece, “Mystery of the Blue Lady”, was accepted into the national disability literary magazine Pentimento. This is her first national exposure in a print journal.

Andre’s poem, “Spoken Word”, chronicles the different means that poets and storytellers with disabilities use to be heard; sign language, communication devices, and expressions. Monique’s reluctance to give public readings inspired the poem. The editor deemed Wilson’s poem to be of such universal importance, that it will be published as the first poem in the anthology.

We are so proud of the literary and creative accomplishments of Monique and Andre, and look forward to seeing more of their work in the future.
