Ability Now Participants Focus on Their Athletic Abilities

TyroneBeing in a wheelchair has never prevented Ability Now participant Tyrone Cobb from playing his favorite game, soccer. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Tyrone has spent most of his life in a wheelchair. As the goalie for his soccer team, the Bombers, he has played exhibition games throughout the world.

His team is part of the Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP), which works to improve the health, independence and social integration of people with physical disabilities through sports, fitness and recreation programs.

In fact, many of Ability Now’s participants are involved in athletics through BORP. Chanelle Stallmeyer, who has been at Ability Now for over 5 years, is also on the Bombers soccer team and plays every Saturday. She can be seen playing the position of goalie when Tyrone is taking a break or absent.

But soccer isn’t for everyone, just ask Oscar Matias. He recently finished a 25 mile cycle race in Sonoma, and is already preparing for his next race in February. Along with being an avid cycler, Oscar is also on the varsity basketball team through BORP, which he plays every Saturday.

Oscar has loved sports since he was little, and at the age of 14 decided it was time to try participating instead of being on the sidelines and just watching. Now at the age of 24, he can’t imagine his life without playing some kind of sports. When asked what the next sport he wants to tackle is, Oscar just shakes his head and smiles. “I don’t know, I love what I’m doing now. But who knows? In five years it could all change.”

With the determination Tyrone, Chanelle, and Oscar have shown so far, there is no doubt they will excel at any additional sports they take on.
